Abstract: This paper discusses the concept of romanticism in Russian literature and how it is defined by a whole multitude of theorists. It also discusses how the concept of romanticism is reflected in the understanding of Pushkin himself. In this article an attempt is made to answer the question: how does Pushkin's romanticism get manifested or in other words, what are the mediators of Pushkin's romanticism. In short, forms of Pushkin's romanticism could include: time and space, i.e. memory, recollections and nostalgia, natural water spaces, celestial phenomena, manifestations of fire and fieriness, natural cataclysms, free-wheeling gypsy mode of life versus petty philistinism, love-lornness, pangs of loneliness, tribulations and tumultuousness of inner world of man, rebelliousness of man at odds with existing social order, craving for unfettered freedom, the cult of individuality, fantasization, lack of rationalization and cold-blooded calculation, flight from routine and mundane life to unknown horizons – soaring into skies, to high mountain peaks, plunging into open seas and forests . . . – and finally, spontaneity of actions, particularly the rebellious ones are some of the significant mediators in Pushkin's romanticism. By way of an example Pushkin’s romantic long poem “Gypsies” has been analyzed at some length.

Abstract: The travel of the Russian merchant Afanasy Nikitin to India in the 1470s is often evoked, especially in official discourses, as a proof of "centuries long relations" between Russia and India. But, in fact, this accidental passage of a lonely merchant from the principality of Tver to the Bahmani Sultanate was just an episode without any consequences, neither for Russia nor for India, for several centuries to come. Afanasy Nikitin died on his way back home. Fortunately, his notes, that he had kept while in India (and/or on his way home), were preserved and passed to Moscow. But they remained little known till the beginning of the 19th century, when historian Nikolai Karamzin (1766–1826) unearthed them in the library of a monastery. Nevertheless, for about a century and a half, these notes (in the 19th century, they got the title "Хожение за три моря") did not attract much attention, either of scholars or of general public. It is only in the 1940s that the notes of Afanasy Nikitin began to be studied seriously in Russia. A lot remains to be done. In the meantime, Afanasy Nikitin has become a mythic figure, a hero of pseudo-historical novels and movies.

Abstract: Since the 1970’s to the end of the twentieth century, America witnessed a colossal exodus of Russian citizens to its soil, especially, people belonging to the Jewish faith. Due to the harsh anti-Semitic policies of the then Communist regime of Soviet Russia, many Russian Jews immigrated to various counties, chiefly, to Israel, Germany, the United States, and a few European nations. Of them all, a vast majority of the immigrants made America their preferred home for resettlement. Gary Shteyngart belongs to one such immigrant family. As a representative of the younger generation of Russian-American novelists, Shteyngart, like his third-wave émigré predecessor Joseph Brodsky, registers his immigrant experiences in English. His writings, predominantly fiction, explores the Jewish immigrant experience in the United States – which is one of the major centres of resettlement for the Soviet-Jews. This paper aims to investigate the wide-ranging issues of cultural hybridity, identity, and the hurdles in assimilation as featured in Shteyngart’s memoir Little Failure (2014). The paper shall focus on Russian related themes depicted in his work, such as, hardships caused due to displacement, problems in assimilation and acceptance in a foreign land, questions of identity, to name a few. Shteyngart skilfully interplays the Russian and American elements back-and-forth in his works, thereby pioneering a new style of English literary landscape, abundant with Russian words and phrases, which is neither Russian nor American – but just like Shteyngart a pure hybrid: Russian-American.

Abstract: This paper is about some of the folk beliefs of evil spirits amongst the people of India and see some analogous beliefs amongst the Slavs. Belief in evil spirits is not confined to only Magadha but is widespread in the whole of India. Since I have worked as a researcher in the Magadha area, Bihar, this study refers to the region. The fear of the malevolent has been depicted in many stories of the past. The discussion about evil spirits and godlings this paper is dealing with is not about regular gods who form the traditional pantheon. They are godlings feared by the village folk. Perpetual oblations are carried out as the godlings directly affect the village folk everyday life and even their occupation. This topic is broad but nonetheless interesting. It requires a more detailed discussion. The paucity of space restricts me to make a few observations.

Abstract: Most of the political debates of the late twentieth and early twentyfirst century focused on an identity crisis of Russia. This crisis was not a direct result of volatility in the post-Soviet space. Most recent identity debates relate to intellectual writings around the 1920s that invoked initial thoughts about Russian national identity owing to the national crisis and the Civil War of 1918- 1921. The main dispute around the Russian identity debate was that between Slavophiles and the Westerners; Russia and Europe; the West and the East. The belongingness became the fundamental issues of the Eurasianists. As per this belief, the Russian civilization did not belong exclusively to European or to Asian categories. The Eurasian movement of the 1920s acquired a distinct connotation postcollapse of Soviet Union. Though neo-Eurasianism equally popularized the idea of Russian cultural closeness to Asia instead of Western Europe, however, this did not reduce the social tensions. Massive inter-ethnic conflicts erupted in the late 1980s and early 1990s linked to ethno-social and cultural factors. Nature of these conflicts was erratic and had the potential of destabilizing the foundational existence of Eurasian identity. In the above context, the theory of ethnogenesis and concepts such as ethnos and super-ethnos that were promoted by Lev Gumilev became a convenient alternative perspective for the study of ethnicity as well as keeping the nation united. This article focuses on the basic understanding of the theory of “Ethnogenesis” and its relevance in the current Russian identity debate.
